Veterans Educational Benefits
The Office of the Registrar at LSU Health Sciences New Orleans serves as the certifying official that acts as liaison between the Department of Veterans Affairs and students who receive Veterans Education Benefits. This involves assisting with a variety of processing and verifying information such as documentation requirements, correspondence and the certification of benefits. Apply for VA Education Benefits online at VA.gov
Veterans of all Chapters (33, 30, 1607 and 1606) must comlete Form 22-1990
- Chapter 1606 eligible recipients are also required to obtain a Notice of Basic Eligibility (DD Form 2384-1) from your unit
- Dependents and Spouses who will use Chapter 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill® must complete Transfer of Entitlement (Form 22-1990E)
- Dependents and Spouses who will use Chapter 35 must complete Dependents' Educational Assistance Program (Form 22-5490)
After 4-6 weeks the VA will mail you a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) stating that you have been awarded an educational benefit. You must forward a copy of this document to our office before we can process your enrollment. The Certificate of Eligibility will look like the image below.
Register or Update your VA account
Create an account on VA.gov. This is where you will go to check your VA deposits, check the history of your certification status and remaining benefits, set up direct deposit, and update your contact information.
Enroll in Classes
Our office will only be able to certify your enrollment once your courses have been added to your schedule. Do not submit a request until your schedule has been completed.
Request Enrollment Certification from LSU Health Sciences New Orleans
Once your schedule is finalized and you have registered for your courses, you should complete the LSUHSC Veterans Certification Request Form. Check to ensure all areas have been addressed before submitting the form. Incomplete forms will not be processed. You must complete a new Certification Request Form for each semester you plan to use VA Educational Benefits. Please allow 30 business days for benefits processing.
If your schedule changes (i.e. your credit hours increase or decrease) after you submit your enrollment certification form, notify our office at veteran@lsuhsc.edu or 504-988-4829.
Tuition Assistance (TA)
Based on your active military or veterans' status, you may be eligible for Tuition Assistance (TA), which would allow your armed service to cover up to 100% of your tuition. Each service has its own criteria for eligibility. Please contact your service's Educational Service Officer (ESO) or counselor before enrolling at LSU Health Sciences New Orleans to determine your eligibility.
